BB guns, bars and attempted kidnappings: Last week in Newton

In "Last Week in Newton," OnCentral recaps some of the week's occurrences in Newton Division of the Los Angeles Police Department.

For the week beginning with July 8 and ending on July 14, incidents within the division included:

July 9, 2012 at approximately 12:30 p.m.: 200 block of West 23rd Street: A woman was having an argument with a co-inhabitant of a multi-unit dwelling. The woman used a kitchen knife to sever the femoral artery in the victim’s right leg. The suspect was later arrested.

July 11, 2012 at approximately 2:00 p.m.: 1100 block of East 43rd Street: A man between 15 and 20 years old was engaged in a disagreement with a neighbor at a family dwelling. The man became angry and shot the victim, whom he knew, in the face with a BB gun. No arrests have been made.

July 11, 2012 at approximately 9 p.m.: 4500 block of Long Beach Avenue: An unknown suspect took the side mirrors from a 2004 Chevrolet truck. After taking the mirrors, the suspect scratched the car with a key, broke its tail light and cracked its windshield. No arrests have been made.

July 13, 2012 at approximately 12:05 a.m.: 3500 block of South Central Avenue: Three Latino men went into a liquor store and took a few cases of beer. They walked out of the store with the beer and, when confronted by someone associated with the store, tried to hit the victim. The suspects fled the scene and have yet to be found.

July 13, 2012 at approximately 5:30 p.m.: 1200 block of Maple Avenue: Four men stood in the way of a victim riding a bicycle. The first suspect told the victim to give him the bike. The suspects then beat the suspect with punches and kicks. They took the bike, but the victim later got the bike back. At that point, the suspects fled.

July 13, 2012 at approximately 9:45 p.m.: Intersection of 52nd Street and Main Street: An unknown suspect fired two bullets at a man. The man was hit once in the thigh. The suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction. No arrests have been made.

July 14, 2012 at approximately 12:20 a.m. 4200 block of South Main Street: Three Latino men in a Toyota pickup truck fired between two and five shots into a local bar. One victim was hit. The suspects then fled southbound on Main Street. No arrests have been made.

July 14, 2012 at approximately 2:15 p.m.: 4400 block of South Broadway: A pair of Latino men stationed themselves outside a house in an attempt to kidnap a victim. After unsuccessfully trying to get inside the home, the men shot the victim and left the scene. No arrests have been made.
