On the two month anniversary of his death, a demonstration rally in support of Trayvon Martin, is planned for Thursday in South L.A at the North campus of West Angeles Church of God in Christ ( which has also been referred to as the West Los Angeles Church in Christ.)
Martin's parents, along with big-name celebrities and religious leaders, are all expected to attend the event to show support.
Seventeen-year-old Martin was shot and killed by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman as the teen was walking home from a convenience store with an iced tea and a bag of skittles. His death sparked a national outcry and led to multiple protests in cities across the U.S. - including those throughout LosAngeles
Special guests at tonight's rally include the Rev. Al Sharpton, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and NAACP president and CEO, Benjamin Todd Jealous. Magic Johnson, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, David Banner and Big Boy, radio host of Power 106, are also scheduled to appear at the 5:30 p.m. rally.
According to a statement from the NAACP, tonight's rally is partly being held to “advocate for crime victims …, educate young people on conflict resolution techniques (and) increase public awareness against all forms of profiling,” CBS reports.
“This is an issue that we need to keep in the forefront of America,” Leon Jenkins, the president of Los Angeles NAACP, told NBC. "We need to not stereotype. We need to
make sure that this does not happen again."
KPCC will be at tonight's event with reporters on scene.
West Angeles Church of God in Christ is located at 3045 Crenshaw Blvd. According to the venue, the doors will open at 4:30 p.m. and the rally is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
